We wholeheartedly recommend a stretchy wrap for at least the first year of life. A wrap provides infants with the extra clinging womblike support, so that they are enclosed, protected and safe. A wrap best provides the head and neck support, that they require. Babies fall asleep pretty easily when carried and for a sleeping infant, head and neck support is essential. Many women find it easier to nurse in the wrap, and like that the shoulder strap can widen as a cover up. The comfort of the wide straps of the wrap is unmatched by any other type of carrier as the weight distribution of your baby is more spread out. If you have any kind of shoulder or back problems the Sleepy Wrap is a godsend. As your baby is essentially wrapped to your body, there are no pressure points.
But, as with any carrier there are some drawbacks. When your baby starts crawling and gets heavier, it is usually easier to carry the baby on your back. This is possible in a wrap but it does take some time to master. You may not have a baby who sits still and is willing to wait. Also, some male partners may not be too enthusiastic about the wrapping process, although we do have a lot of men writing to us joyous with the intimacy that they experience when wrapping their babies close. And then, some just don't like that they can't take the carrier on and off and just prefer a structured carrier altogether.
Yet, the fact that the Sleepy Wrap is incredibly comfortable, spreads wide over both shoulders, and doesn't pinch or have pressure points on you or the baby is a big plus that is hard to overlook.
