How do I wash the Cloth Dipes?

Be sure to follow manufacturer's washing instructions

If you are going to use a Dry Diaper Pail (I recommend this way) you will need a PUL bag such as the Knickernappies Doorknob Diaper Pail. You place all the soiled dipes in the dry bag until you are ready to wash.

Before placing the dipes in the wash if you are using pockets make sure you remove the pockets from the dipes for better cleaning.

You can use different detergents. I use ALL free and clear. Savannah had a reaction to Tide Free and Clear because that detergent contains enzymes. I do a pre wash, wash, and extra rinse on my front loader. I only use a quarter to half of the laundry detergent than I would normally use.

Wool needs special care and should not be washed in this manner. Follow care instructions provided by manufacturer.

Here is a chart of what detergents work well with cloth dipes!
~All Free and Clear (he)
~Allen's Naturally
~Mountain Green Free and Clear (he)
~Mountain Green Free and Clear Baby (he)
~Nellie's All Natural (he)
~Planet Ultra Liquid and Powder (he)

Basically, you need a detergent that is free of enzymes, dyes, perfumes, optical brighteners or any other component designed to be left on your diapers after washing.
Specialty detergents with fabric softeners or wrinkle guards will not be suitable; however, a detergent with non-chlorine bleach or oxygen bleaching capabilities may be fine.  And just to be clear, soaps are not detergents, and soaps are generally not recommended for cloth diapering.

THE MOST IMORTANT AND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION: WHAT ABOUT THE POOP???

Well glad you asked! :) For exclusively breastfed babies, you do not need to rinse the poop before washing. Say What?!? Yes you do not need to rinse the poop before washing for exclusively breastfed babies ONLY. For formula fed babies or older babies and toddlers, you need to remove as much poop as you can from the dipes before washing. A diaper sprayer works wonders in helping acheive this. A diaper sprayer attached to your toliet and sprays the poop into the toliet. No Dunking! Then wash your dipes.

If there is an ammonia odor from your dipes or they smell, you using TOO MUCH detergent! Cloth dipes when washed properly do NOT smell at all. There are ways to get rid of the smell by rinsing the dipes again or using vinegar in your washing machine.
