Cloth Dipe Information

Here are some common terms in the world of cloth diapering!

All in One Diaper (AIO)- as close to disposable as you can get without throwing it away!

Pocket diaper- waterproof outer layer with fleece or absorbent material sewn onto it with a "pocket" between the two to stuff inserts

One-size diaper (OS)- diaper that is adjustable to fit most babies from birth to potty (7 lbs to 35 lbs)
  • Pre-fold diaper- most commonly known as a burp cloth

COVER The waterproof portion of your diaper system usually made of PUL (polyurethane laminate)

DOUBLER: extra absorbency added to diapers for nighttime or nap time or heavy wetters

SOAKER: refers to the middle or absorbent layer or a diaper or a wool or fleece cover, which are water resistant rather than water proof

FITTED: diaper that is contoured and usually closes with snaps or hook & loops (like Velcro), can be AIO or require a cover

FLEECE: refers to polyester fleece, used for covers and liners and skirties, shorties, and longies for fitted diapers.

HEMP: Hemp is a course fiber made from the inner bark of the hemp plant. It is becoming increasingly popular for use in diapers because of its durability, absorbency and natural anti-microbial properties.

SHERPA: Sherpa Terry is knit terry fabric, just like a baby towel, that has been brushed and washed to raise the fibers and give a fluffy super soft feel.

 MICROFIBER- mostly used with inserts

BAMBOO: Becoming increasingly popular. Cloth wipes and the inner of the dipes use Bamboo because of its antibacterial properties.

WOOL: made of natural fleece, used for covers; requires special care.
